Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. on Fox
Comedy pilots always find themselves in murky waters. Typically, comedies work because we get to know the characters and get to love the screwballs that they are and love the crazy situations they find themselves in. And that is hard to do in a pilot since it has to not only introduce the characters but make the audience want to care immediately about what these characters will be going through.
Surprisingly, Fox’s newest comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine exceeded my expectations and made me want to stick around — unlike the already-released ABC comedy pilots on Hulu. I’m looking at you, The Goldbergs. The show follows an ensemble in a police station in Brooklyn led by Andy Samberg who plays Detective Jake Peralta, a talented detective with a carefree attitude. Honorable mentions go to Melissa Fumero’s Detective Amy Santiago, whose need to prove herself called for some hilarious moments, including dumping entirely too much hot sauce on her sandwich to prove she could handle the heat; Terry Crews for his hilarious role as Sergeant Terry Jeffords who is too afraid to get back in the action for fear of being hurt and not being able to see his little girls grow up — something that I’m glad to see finally being discussed because that HAS to be such a huge issue for law enforcement officials to deal with; and, lastly, Chelsea Peretti as administrator Gina whose one-liners are simply terrific.
I liked several things about this show, but the biggest has to be that these cops are competent. They aren’t goofballs with guns. Too often shows rely on the gags that people are bad at their jobs and, frankly, I don’t find that funny. In this economy, it just makes me mad that those kinds of people would even have a job when many do not.
My only hope is that there is some extra in-office time since Peretti’s character is definitely a scene-stealer and deserves much more attention.
Let’s check in next week to see if we should return to Brooklyn…
