TV: ‘How I Met Your Mother’ may live on with a spinoff

How I Met Your Mother returns to CBS on September 23 at 8 p.m.

We’ve met the mother; now what about a series depicting how she met the father?

In an interview with TV Guide, HIMYM co-creator and executive producer Carter Bays said he’s not ruling out the possibility of a relationship-themed spinoff. Theories on what that could entail include a series following Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), newlyweds Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) or How I Met Your Father, which would follow the Mother’s (Cristin Milioti) journey to how she met Ted (Josh Radnor).

This isn’t the first time talks of a spinoff have occurred. In early 2012, Bays and fellow executive producer Craig Thomas said a spinoff was a possibility.

“We’ve had conversations about rewinding back to 2005 and doing a series called How I Met Your Father,” Thomas said. “From the perspective of what was happening with the Mother all those years. Occasionally, she’ll stumble through McLaren’s and no one will see her.”

Before they decided the way season eight would actually end — and before contract negotiations were completed — Bays and Thomas said they thought about technically ending the series after season eight and doing a ninth season that would show what happened after Ted met the Mother or doing a season of little stories that happened throughout the whole time period of the show.

The ninth and final season will take place over the course of Barney and Robin’s wedding weekend. Guests expected include Sherri Shepherd, Ellie Kemper and Roger Bart — who will play an employee at the hotel where the wedding is located. Wayne Brady as Barney’s brother, Tim Gunn — who made his first hilarious cameo in the 100th episode — and John Lithgow as Barney’s father will all return for the final season as well.

Although there is one guest I am particularly interested in meeting: Robin’s mother.

“We’ll meet Robin’s new stepmom, who wants to sing at her wedding,” Bays said in an interview with TV Guide. “And Robin’s mom, whom we’ve said almost nothing about, will also be a factor, whether we meet her or not. We’ll be exploring why Robin hasn’t talked to her. Her personality will help explain Robin in the same way her dad’s did.”

I’m incredibly excited for this season and cannot wait for the show to return. Are you excited? Are you hoping any familiar faces will pop up during the show’s final season? Let me know @buzzlightmeryl
