How I Met Your Mother will return to CBS in the fall for its last season
Wayne Brady will return to play Barney’s brother James in the final season of How I Met Your Mother.
James has not been seen on the show since 2011, but the resurgence isn’t surprising. The ninth and final season of the show will center on the weekend of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) wedding. So appearances from family members is expected.
Frances Conroy as Barney’s mother Loretta was always a treat and should hopefully return. Season six largely explored Barney finding his father, Jerry Whitaker (John Lithgow), and dealing with his feelings about missed opportunities and settling down. It seems only right that Jerry should be there for one of the most important days of Barney’s life now that the two are reconnected.
With this last season, I hope we get to see some of the family members who have been introduced and never returned to again.
Remember that time Robin had a sister? Well she does: Katie (Lucy Hale). And Barney apparently has a half-sister too: Carly (Ashley Benson). And they both grew up to be pretty little liars…
Carly was featured just last season — and it was an incredibly awkward storyline — but Katie has not been spoken of since her appearance in season two. Obviously, it is not monumental that they come back; however, I am always bothered when a long running show introduces characters and never returns to them.
