TV: ‘Glee’ season 5 casting changes

Glee will return to Fox in the fall

We already know that Glee has been renewed through season six. The real question was which characters will make it to that season.

Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Harry Shum Jr. and Heather Morris are not returning to season five as series regulars. Dianna Agron, who was not a regular for season four either, will also maintain a recurring castmember position.

According to, star Jane Lynch said the changes are “realistic.”

“That’s the nature of portraying a realistic view of high school: Kids graduate,” she said. “They move on… But the show will evolve and when a show evolves that means you have to let some people go, and let some storylines go, so that you can pursue new ones.”

The cuts aren’t solely for the kids either. Jayma Mays and Dot Marie Jones are expected to return at some point but will not be series regulars, according to E! News.

Jayma Mays has signed on to Will Arnett’s new CBS comedy The Millers. She will replace Mary Elizabeth Ellis to play Debbie, Arnett’s sister on the show.

Newbies Melissa Benoist, Jacob Artist, Becca Tobin, Blake Jenner and Alex Newell have all been promoted to series regulars for season five.

Lea Michele — I feel like she will still play Rachel when she’s 50 — Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Matthew Morrison, Naya Rivera, Darren Criss, Chord Overstreet, Lynch, Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale will still all be seen as regulars in season five.

How people think this will make the show any different from season four baffles me. With the exception of Morris, all of the demoted regulars already had a smaller spot on the show. Mercedes (Riley) and Mike (Shum Jr.) always seemed to magically come back to McKinley together while Puck (Salling) appeared every now and then to offer advice to his brother (Artist) and go-to-but-not-go-to college with Finn (Monteith).

Morris’ change is not surprising at all. No one needs another pregnant teen storyline. Although, I still loathe their terrible idea to send Brittany (Morris) to M.I.T. She deserved a better sendoff.

The only real surprise is from Mays, especially since the finale saw her and Will (Morrison) finally getting married. I guess they’re going to have to “get to know each other” all over again.

As for the newbies, I just hope they either grow as characters or get better storylines — aka no Catfishing ever again.
